Beyond Borders: Ghana’s Handball Odyssey in the ANOCA Games 2023

The recently concluded ANOCA Games for Africa Zone 3 proved to be a pivotal moment for the Ghana National Women’s Handball team, as they navigated peaks and valleys on their quest for victory.

Organized by the Association of National Olympics Committee of Africa, this tournament not only tested the mettle of the Ghanaian team but also served as a crucial stepping stone for teams preparing for the Africa Games in Ghana in March 2024. The event, held in Togo from December 4th to 7th, 2023, showcased a dynamic clash between Ghana and formidable opponents Burkina Faso and Togo in group A.

The journey commenced with meticulous preparations as the Handball Association of Ghana handpicked 30 players for an intensive training camp in Accra, hosted at the Accra Sports Stadium. Under the watchful guidance of Joseph Addoquaye, the head coach of the police handball club and the women’s senior national team, the players underwent rigorous training sessions to fine-tune their skills and strategies.

From the initial 30, 16 players were selected to represent Ghana in the ANOCA Games. This selected squad embarked on a journey to Lome, Togo, where they faced Burkina Faso and Togo in group-stage matches on Wednesday. The outcomes were a mixed bag, with a defeat against Burkina Faso with a scoreline of 27-22 and a triumphant victory over Togo with a commanding score of 19-36.

Despite the setback against Burkina Faso, Ghana’s National Women’s Handball team showcased resilience and determination. The team progressed to the 3rd and 4th placement match against Nigeria from group B. However, this encounter concluded in disappointment for Ghana as Nigeria secured a win with a scoreline of 16-29.

Throughout the tournament, Mr. Salifu Abdullah, the chairman of the Northern Regional Handball Association, led the delegation for the Women’s Senior national team. His guidance and support were crucial in navigating the challenges and successes faced by the team.

Adding another layer to the ANOCA Games narrative, the tournament saw the host nation Togo, along with Benin, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Ghana, and eventual champions Cote D’Ivoire, competing fiercely. In a thrilling finale, Cote D’Ivoire triumphed over Burkina Faso in the finals, clinching the tournament title.

Returning home on Saturday, December 9th, 2023, the Ghana National Women’s Handball team can reflect on a tournament that not only tested their mettle but also provided valuable insights for future competitions. As the team sets its sights on the All Africa Games in 2024, the experiences gained in Togo will undoubtedly contribute to their growth and readiness for the challenges that lie ahead.
